Zak Penn’s New ‘Dozen’

July 6, 2007

charles-bronson.gifThe original Dirty Dozen is a classic war movie and you can’t touch the classics.  You can’t stop Hollywood though, and Dozen  has fallen into the remake trap.  This project has actually been in the works for a little while now, but the script, written by André Nemec, Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, was apparently not any good, because now Zak Penn has been brought in to rewrite it.  Penn has been pretty popular lately, working mostly on comic book adaptations for the big screen.  There has been buzz around his latest project, The Grand, which he wrote and directed, but I haven’t gotten a chance to check it out.  He seems like a talented writer so perhaps the remake will be done some justice.

The movie is about a group of military convicts sent in on a suicide mission to do some damage during WWII.  Whoever gets cast in this movie has some big shoes to fill because the original had some iconic actors —  Lee Marvin, Charles BronsonErnest Borgnine, and Donald Sutherland just to name a few.  There isn’t any word on when this one might be coming out, but I’ll keep you posted.

Dustin Hoffman Working On ‘Personal Injuries’

July 6, 2007

hoffman.gifI think Dustin Hoffman is one of the best actor’s working today and definitely one of my favorites . His performance in Straw Dogs, which is both brilliant and hard to watch at times, alone is a testament to the amount of talent he has. His next movie, Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, is set to come out November 17, but in the mean time he’s working on something new.

While speaking with USA Today, he told the publication about his next project, an adaptation of Scott Turow’s book Personal Injuries. “It’s based on a book I bought myself, ‘Personal Injuries’ by Scott Turow. It’s about a personal-injury lawyer, also known as an ambulance chaser,” said Hoffman.

Hoffman is currently working on screenplay and hopes to have the film completed by this time next year. He also plans on starring and producing this one. I haven’t read the book but it seems to have Hoffman excited, hopefully his enthusiasm will carry over into the writing and his acting.

Ben & Matt Writing Again?

July 5, 2007

It’s been almost 10 years since Ben Affleck and Matt Damon won an Oscar for writing benmatt.gif.  It’s been nothing but good things for these guys ever since, well mostly for Damon, but they somehow managed to not write anything else together.

However, sources have told Us Magazine that the pair are down in Hawaii working on a brand new project.  Sounds to me like they’ve got it made, they’re making $13,000 a week to write the thing and they’re taking plenty of time to get some ideas flowing by surfing.  If only we could all be so lucky.  Either way I’m excited to see what these guys can churn out.

Harrison And Shia Together On The Set Of ‘Indy 4’

June 30, 2007

harrisonshia.gifSeems someone managed to sneak a camera past the production crew on the set of Indy 4 and snagged some pictures of Harrison Ford and Shia LaBeouf together for the first time.  If you’re interested, Just Jared has about six pictures of the duo together.  The pictures are kind of humorous.  I think the intent is to make Ford look outdated and uncool when he meets his son, played by Shia.  And giving validity to the rumors about the kind of Shia would be, he is all decked out in his ‘greaser’ attire.

Still too earlier to tell whether this is going to shape up to good or not.  One can only hope

Excerpt From ‘Zak and Miri…’

June 25, 2007

kevinsmith.gifI told you before a little bit about Kevin Smith’s newest comedy project, Zack and Miri Make a Porno — I don’t make up the titles I just report them. I’m actually a big fan of Smith’s and have been interested to see how this film would turn out.

Anyway, he released a single page from the script to Entertainment Weekly and they have since posted it online. It doesn’t really give away anything, just shows you what to expect. EW substituted all the profanity with the word ‘cuddle.’ The film is about two loser character who are in a rut in their lives, who decide to make a porno.  Rosario Dawson is reportedly in talks to play the part of Miri.  Obviously this isn’t a family film, but if you’re interested check it out.

Freeman Is Mandela

June 22, 2007

freeman.gifMorgan Freeman truly is one of the best actors working right now, probably one of the best actors to ever have acted, in my opinion, and it looks as though he’ll be taking his already amazing career to new heights. Variety is reporting that Freeman will be playing former South African President Nelson Mandela in The Human Factor, an independently financed drama, based on the upcoming John Carlin book The Human Factor: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Changed the World.

The film is set after the fall of apartheid, when South Africa was host to the 1995 Rugby World Cup. Mandela was in his first term as South African president, and he used the event as a way to end decades of mistrust and hatred between whites and blacks.

Of the role, Freeman said, “I have known Nelson Mandela personally for quite some time, and am continually in awe of his enormous presence in the world. The opportunity to portray him in this film is a great honor.”

Building The ‘$40,000 Man’

June 19, 2007

daley.gifThis one seems like it could potentially be good. New Line has just purchased a script for The 40,000 Man, written by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein.

Story is about an American hero/astronaut who ends up being mangled in a car accident and the government decides to rebuild him, but only offers a budget of $40,000.
