Weekend Roll Call: 6-25-07

Evan and GodWe’ve got two new movies in the top two this week. Steve Carell’s Noah story takes the top spot, and a movie I knew very little about hits me with a powerful right cross and sends whatever box office predicting skills I thought I had to the mat.

This weekend’s new champ, of course, was Evan Almighty starring Steve Carell and Morgan Freeman. Although I’ve read some bad things about this movie, it managed to take the top spot with a cool $32.1 million. I still have to believe there are some laughs to be had in this one. Don’t let a bad review scare you off. Go in with modest expectations.

1408 comes in at number two this week. I owe everybody involved with this one a huge apology. I did not see this one coming. Apparently there’s some writer named Steven King who people seem to like that had a hand in this. I probably should have expected it to at least crack the top five just because it’s different from pretty much everything else out right now. Lorenzo has said plenty about this one so far in his excellent review, so I’ll say no more. John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson edged out number 3 with $20.2 million.

That number three movie would be Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer still bringing in theater goers at $20.1 million.

Rounding out the top five are the cunning, conning boys in Ocean’s 13 with $11.3 million and Knocked Up with $10.6 million.

For the record, Pirates of the Carribean is holding up better than I thought it would. It comes in at 6th this week with $7.2 million.

Top 5 Results:

1. Evan Almighty – $32.1 million

2. 1408 – $20.2 million

3. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer – $20.1 million

4. Ocean’s 13 – $11.3 million

5. Knocked Up – $10.6 million
