Review — Surf’s Up

surfs up

That’s right, another movie about penguins. Should you be excited? I think so.  Surf’s Up is movie that is obviously written for children, but I have to be honest and admit I also had a great time watching it, too. I found it to be a funny and very charming movie.

The story, told in documentary style, revolves around Cody Maverick (Shia LeBeouf), a teenage surfer, as he attempts to prove to everyone and himself that he is good enough to compete in a big surfing competition and win. He’s allowed to compete but once he arrives he finds out that he might be in over his head; while trying to take on the current champion Tank Evans (Diedrich Bader) he’s pretty much humiliated. Luckily, The Geek (Jeff Bridges) is there to help prepare him for the competition. Other voice talent includes: Jon Heder, Zooey Deschanel, and James Woods.

The animation was top-notch, it is definitely one of the best looking cg animated movies I’ve seen. The texturing was amazing and the water looked incredible. The animators chose to go for a more realistic approach with the character design, but that doesn’t hinder their overall appeal. I also really enjoyed the documentary spin, as it allowed for another level of interaction for the audience. It was well done assortment of present video, vintage video, pictures, and character interviews. The voice acting is spot on and they really make these characters enjoyable to watch.

Don’t believe you have to be a kid to enjoy this one, because I had a blast. Might be better suited for a matinee, but it’s still worth checking out.
