No ‘Indy’ For Connery

There’s news over at Cinematical about an official press release concerning the new Indiana Jones film.

Firstly, John Hurt has joined the cast, but there is no word yet on what role he’ll be playing.

Also, it appears Sean Connery, who played Dr. Henry Jones, was unable to be persuaded out of retirement to reprise his role in the upcoming Indiana Jones 4. Being a fan of the franchise, I’m more than a little let down by this news, since his role has always been memorable and humorous. Erik Davis, of Cinematical, plays with the idea that perhaps this could just be a ploy to throw us off the idea of him making an appearance. In my heart I want that to be the case, but by the looks of it he really won’t be in the movie.

In Connery’s official statement, he says: “I get asked the question so often, I thought it best to make an announcement. I thought long and hard about it and if anything could have pulled me out of retirement it would have been an Indiana Jones film. I love working with Steven and George, and it goes without saying that it is an honor to have Harrison as my son. But in the end, retirement is just too damned much fun. I, do however, have one bit of advice for Junior: Demand that the critters be digital, the cliffs be low, and for goodness sake keep that whip by your side at all times in case you need to escape from the stunt coordinator! This is a remarkable cast, and I can only say, ‘Break a leg, everyone.’ I’ll see you on May 22, 2008, at the theater!”

Well, I still hope this movie turns out to be good!

Sad news indeed. I’m still looking forward to this, Connery or not.

I’ve also heard rumors of Shia LeBouf being in this as Indy’s son. True?
